How Many Outfits Does a Newborn Need? For New Parents!

Newborns come all cute and amazing, but there is something every parent is worried about and doesn’t know what to do, especially if the baby coming is their first!

How many outfits does a newborn need? What are those outfits that parents should make ready for the little soul that is coming? Are there a lot of them?

In this article, I will mention some specific pieces of garments your newborn needs, and they are the most important purchases parents should make!

Main Points

  • Onesies, pajamas, and bibs are three garments your newborn will need.
  • The highest number of pairs of baby garments stand on bibs and socks.
  • Drop the number of newborn outfits if you can’t truly afford them or if they are too expensive.
  • The material of the items and the season your child is born are two super-important considerations.

How Many Outfits Are Enough for Newborns?

First and foremost, there are a few outfits that your newborn will need and they include onesies, pajamas, pants or leggings, socks, hats, swaddles, sleep sacks, jumpers, mittens, booties, and bibs.

Onesies

Onesies are garments like overalls for babies and they come in two ways, short-sleeved and long-sleeved. The number of onesies your baby will need is four to six.

Pajamas, Sleep Sacks and Swaddles

Both pajamas and sleep sacks are baby garments that they need when going to sleep. I am well aware that you know what pajamas are, and what you don’t know is that your newborn will need three to five pairs of pajamas.

When it comes to sleep sacks, they are a kind of wearable blanket in which your babies will be super comfortable while sleeping. You need between one and two sleep sacks. Two is better, though.

Swaddles are blankets that help you wrap your infants perfectly so that they feel comfortable all the way up. Your newborn can do more than great with two swaddles.

Pants/Leggings

Even though most people avoid using leggings or pants on their newborns, they are quite necessary! It is essential for the hips of your baby to have leggings on them and besides everything babies look very cute in them.

Make sure you have a pair of two to three pairs of leggings in your bags.

Socks and Hats

Five pairs of socks should definitely be in the bag of a newborn and that’s because they provide babies with extreme coziness, no matter whether it is winter or summer.

Coziness is also related tightly to babies’ heads! It would be perfect to pack two to three hats that are lightweight and made of smooth materials. If your baby is born in summer, make sure to use sun hats!

Bibs and Mittens

Newborns have refluxes of any kind and in order to not destroy anything they are wearing you should make sure to use bibs. Now, because of those refluxes, you would want to have at least ten pieces of bibs hanging around.

Mittens are mostly used for warmth, but still, I also have used them on my children for protection. Two to three pairs of mittens are good to go.

Jumpers

If the weather isn’t too promising, there is nothing better than having some jumpers or sweaters around. Two to three pieces of jumpers are more than enough for a newborn.

What to Consider When Preparing Newborn’s Outfits?

Besides the number of clothes that you need, it is quite crucial to have in mind some other things when choosing your newborn’s clothes or the considerations you need to have.

Season

As I mentioned above, mostly in the hat types, the season that your baby is born is quite an important fact to consider and that’s because you may need to warm up the game a little bit. In this case, you might want to purchase some super-warm and comfortable blankets.

Materials

A baby’s skin is very sensitive when compared to toddlers and adults and the material of the clothes they wear is an important consideration. The best material for your newborns’ garments is cotton, keep that in mind.

Washing

You need to wash newborn clothes quite frequently because they don’t have control as we do so if your just-born baby is a mess-lover you have to wash them every day.

Yet again, I would advise you to not change and wash the baby’s clothes once an hour passes because you will be left without them.

Expenses

Affordability is quite crucial when it comes to the exact number of garments your baby needs. You don’t need hundreds of clothes! Make sure to choose what your baby needs and you will notice that the expenses will be in a normal range.

So, if you don’t really want to put too much money into them or you just can’t afford them, you can drop the number of outfits by one or two.

Size Fittings for Newborns

Most parents really struggle on choosing the right size for their newborns and that’s because they all come in different sizes including weight mostly. For example, you can buy 0-3 sized outfits but then you notice that nothing fits.

To help you get through this “issue”, I want to mention the sizing chart for babies. Check the table down below!

Final Words

The main point of choosing baby clothes is all related to the most important things they need. As you can see, mentioned above are listed different pieces of garments, and you can be more than sure you’ll need them.

What is important is that you also consider the points I mentioned above before making any purchase.

You don’t need hundreds of clothes, so make sure you don’t spend a lot of money on them and then notice that you haven’t used them at all! Don’t forget that babies grow up pretty quickly.
